So how do two travelers who cherish what the world has to offer, savored
a lot of it but still hungered for more meet? In a restaurant
in Calgary, Alberta, Canada of course! Tim had been sick as a
dog for more than a week and he was tired of dry toast and chicken soup
so he ventured off to a find something more appetizing. He found
me. I grew tired of sitting on the couch watching yet another
TV program in my housecoat. So I ventured out and found Tim.
Cyberspace was our cupid's arrow. 21 days later we were married;
we are not a statistic - we are an anomaly. This summer will be our
four-year anniversary and with each passing day we are more in love
than when we first met.
Tim has a sense of humor unparalleled to anyone else I had ever met
and the conversations we have even time stands still for. It all
seemed like a whirlwind. So much so once I excused myself to go
to the washroom and proceeded directly into the men's room! Gallantry
is yet another of Tim's genuinely instilled behaviors. As I came
out he was standing guard at the door directing other men to the men's
room in the bar. A match made in heaven or in front of the washroom
I was more than smitten.
We not only share a love of travel but also a curiosity of why people
travel the way they do. When Tim and I go anywhere we are
constantly amazed at how stressed this world is becoming. Traffic,
airport lines, costs going up and time available going down. Long
hours needed for careers, leading to less time for couples to spend
with each other - it is a rare thing to see a couple who really share
a connection. It is more common to hear a conversation where one
person's comments only embarrass their partner or to observe one person
participating in an activity to merely please the other. We still
talk about a couple we saw in Palm Springs, California. While
driving through Joshua Tree National Park in the heat of the afternoon,
we passed a couple riding a tandem bicycle, climbing a mountain we were
driving down. The husband was intense, leaning low on the front
handlebar, digging deep on every turn of the pedal; the wife on the
back seat sitting straight up, her arms crossed with a look of utter
disgust. She was totally exhausted and completely disinterested.
We looked at each other and knew she hates every minute of her vacation.
Another time we remember so clearly occurred in Las Vegas, sin city,
the town that does not sleep. Great shows, great food, but gambling
and free flowing booze too. We entered the lobby of our hotel
after a rock concert and came across a man staggering and slurring his
speech complaining he just needed a little more time and money in the
casino. Slowly keeping pace with him but five steps behind was
his wife holding their children's hands with a distant look on her face.
She was probably wondering how they were going to make ends meet that
month. We just shook our heads and wondered why do people do this
to themselves and to each other?
Shortly afterwards Tim and I began discussing in earnest how people traveled and why no one seemed to enjoy the experience as much as we did. We have come to the conclusion most travelers will not move out of their comfort zone. And who can blame them! With all the demands on their time and resources, travel is relegated to a few searches on the Internet, price playing a dominant role and the rehashing of those tried and true destinations.
We don't travel, we explore! We use travel as a time to be together
and share new things, new food or see sights others just go right by.
For us travel is relaxing and refreshing. We learn, we share and
we enjoy every minute of it. We are organized for speed through
the airports but we include time to dwell on sunsets, flowers or water
falls. Our website is for those who like us want to travel well,
not spend extravagantly, but invest in experiences that are truly worthwhile.
